Sloping-off to ski triumph
Quote:
A SHEFFIELD school girl has skied to success by winning a national championship the day before her 13th birthday.
Hannah Handford-Styring, of Millhouses, Sheffield, was crowned British Ladies Indoor Moguls Ski Champion in the competition at Castleford's XScape centre in West Yorkshire.
She beat all the other competitors in her age group and the only skiers to beat Hanna, then 12, in the whole of the competition, were four older men.
A member of the Yorkshire Freestyle Ski Team, Hannah has been a keen skier since the age of five.
The competition was her sixth national championship since she started entering them, aged seven.
The Notre Dame high school student said: "It was amazing to go into a final feeling so confident. Being the leader in qualification meant I got to ski last so could see what the other competitors had done. I knew I had to be aggressive but at the same time not push too hard so I didn't fall."
Her father and coach, Peter Handford-Styring, said his daughter hopes to compete internationally in 2010 and gain a place on the England Moguls development team.
The men's competition was won by another Sheffield-based skier - Andy Longley.
A mogul course contains a series of difficult bumps and mounds which the skier must negotiate and is used frequently in freestyle skiing.
