British woman to ski solo to North Pole
Thursday 19 July 2007
A British woman has announced she is planning to be the first woman to attempt to ski solo and unsupported to the North Pole.
Hannah McKeand at the South Pole
Hannah McKeand plans to attempt the record-breaking feat next February, if weather conditions allow, and it should take her around 60 days. The route she has chosen is one that has been used before but it took Pen Hadow three attempts before he was successful in 2003.
Last year 34 year-old Ms McKeand became the fastest person to ski solo to The South Pole.
It is a shorter route to the North pole than the South but the conditions and terrain are more difficult.
Ms McKeand hopes her trip will help raise awareness about the environment and climate change. She is currently seeking sponsorship.
