The world famous Eisriensenwelt ice caves near Salzburg are continuing to expand and it appears to be due to climate change.
The ice caves are said to be the largest in the world and attract thousands of visitors who go into the sub-terrannean world to see the breathtakingly beautiful ice formations.
Nature is awesome
One of the first structures you will see as you enter the caves wasn’t even there 10 years ago. The ice pillar was formed over the last decade by melted snow trickling down through cracks in the rocks.
Put simply, the higher outside temperature melts more of the snow and ice up in the mountains and so more water flows into the caves and then it turns to ice.
ICE GROWS
There are many thousands of caves in The Alps but only a small amount have ice as the temperature inside has to remain below freezing throughout the summer months.
Visitor’s comments say it all;
“An exhilarating journey into another world, far from our busy lives at home.”
“The whole experience is awesome, there is breathtaking beauty inside the caves.”
