Russian Flag under North Pole

Russian explorers have planted their flag under the ice cap at the North Pole.
The melting ice has led to competing claims over access to the Arctic resources. Other countries, including the US, have challenged Russia’s claims to territory in the Arctic.
President Putin has said there is an urgent need for Russia to secure its strategic, scientific, economic and defence interests in the region.
The scientists were aboard 2 mini-submarines and after planting the titanium rust-proof flag they collected scientific samples.
