Crested Butte, CO - The Subaru U.S. Freeskiing series, the premier big mountain competition, brings the third stop of the tour to Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR). The 17th Annual U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championship, a longstanding event held at Crested Butte, has now become part of the Mountain Sports International (MSI) World Tour and will also be an official stop on both the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series (USFS).
"We are pleased to associate Crested Butte's U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships with MSI and be included in the World Tour. With the extreme terrain that Crested Butte is know for, our great snow conditions and the support of MSI, we are ensured a world class event for spectators, sponsors and athletes," said Ken Stone, CBMR's Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.
Competitors from around the world will battle for the $23,400 cash purse, with the Men's and women's overall tour point leaders taking home $4,500 each. New to the World tour competition in Crested Butte will be the Junior and Masters divisions. Crested Butte was the first to allow Junior competitors, ages 14-17 years, in 2001. The juniors division along with the Master division continues to grow in competitor numbers every year.
CBMR's Extreme Limits terrain will be the chosen territory for the competition. With more than 25 feet of snow this season the freeskiers will have the best conditions in years. These world famous 583 acres of double-black diamond, ungroomed expert-only terrain are some of the steepest lift-served runs in North America.
"Having Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships become a part of the US Series and World Tour Series is very exciting. To partner with the longest running extreme skiing event in conjunction with the world's most competitive tour is an ideal match. MSI is looking forward to enhancing the tradition of Crested Butte event and entertaining the community with the world's finest skiers. It is sure to be a flagship event of the US Freeskiing Series."
The USFS, which is owned and operated by sports marketing and promotions company Mountain Sports International (MSI) and sanctioned by the International Freeskiers Association (IFSA), now boasts a bigger prize purse than ever before at over $100,000 cash.
MSI will be posting comprehensive same-day video webcasts of the final rounds on the newly redesigned and recently launched
MSI, which features state of the art video and photo player technology. The daily uploads of video, photos, news and results of each day's competition action will be available after each day concludes. For further information and event updates visit
