FIS Confirms Beaver Creek Schedule
BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (Nov. 23) - The International Ski Federation Friday confirmed the race schedule for the Nov. 29-Dec. 2 Charles Schwab Birds of Prey races as the Audi FIS World Cup heads to Colorado next week. Crews at Beaver Creek Resort have been working around the clock in cold temperatures to make snow down the challenging Birds of Prey course. Both Vail and Beaver Creek are also now open to the public.
"This is why Vail and Beaver Creek have such a high reputation - because they get it done regardless of weather challenges," said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Vice President of Events Calum Clark in announcing the FIS approval. "They have the best technology on that mountain and the organizers once again have put out a massive effort to overcome the unseasonable weather."
Guenther Hujara, FIS men's race director, conferred with Clark concerning conditions for the Charles Schwab Birds of Prey race week. The arrival of cold weather this week helped clinch the approval, Clark said.
Tom Johnston, USSA's alpine technical adviser, has been overseeing course preparation with Jimmy Roberts, Beaver Creek's renowned mountain operations director, and Chief of Course Greg Johnston (no relation). "We've made a lot of snow in the last couple of days. Since it's gotten colder, they've been making it round-the-clock," USSA's Johnston said.
NBC and Versus will broadcast coverage from Beaver Creek and WCSN.com will provide webcasting.
