Default Alta, Utah in Dec vs. Jan

Hello,

First time poster here. My family (including young kids, beginners) is considering skiing in Alta, Utah, and choosing between two sets of dates: Dec 10-17 vs. Jan. 4-11. How do the dates compare in terms of ski conditions? Lodging would be easier in December, so how is the skiing then?

Thanks very much,

Leslie

I think having a ski vacation there at late December is best according to my friend.

I would prefer January but I recommend going there between late February and early March to avoid the crowd and the snow is great for both hiking and skiing.

Here's the snow trend history from Alta website since 1980:

Nov 78.30"
Dec 90.13"
Jan 95.34"
Feb 90.68"
Mar 97.52"
Apr 72.29"

If you want to enhance you're skiing skills, technical terrains would come up in by March and the powder is good by this time.

Hope this brief info will help you and I recommend this ski resort review as a your guide: Alta Utah (US) Ski Resort Guide

Happy skiing
