Smith Leads U.S. Women in GS
Leanne Smith (Conway, NH) held onto second place in both heats of a giant slalom to finish second overall in the 2008 Alpine NorAm Cup Finals at Whiteface Mountain on Thursday.
21-year-old Shona Rubens of Canada won the slalom, while Caitlin Ciccone (Bethlehem, N.H.) blistered her second run to improve from 11th to third place.
Rubens, recovering from a knee injury, finished fourth in the opening run of the ladies giant slalom and came back with the second best time in the final run.
After a chilly morning, the field of over 70 skiers was treated to a calm, bluebird day and raced down a pair of GS course sets on Thruway and Draper's Drop that incorporated a remnant from the alpine events in the 1980 Winter Games.
Chelsea Marshall (Pittsfield, VT) was fourth, while Megan McJames (Park City, Utah) held the first run lead but struggled in the afternoon to place fifth.
The 2008 Alpine NorAm Cup Finals continue Friday with a men's giant slalom on the same hill.
