Delta Entertains Team at Munich Airport
MUNICH, Germany (March 3) - Delta Air Lines customers in Munich had an exciting surprise at check in on Monday. Top U.S. Ski Team athletes including Olympic champion Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) and World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) were on hand signing autographs at the ticket counter at Munich's Franz Josef Strauss International Airport. The Team made a special visit to meet new sponsor Delta Air Lines. Munich is the most important European hub for the U.S. Ski Team, which moves hundreds of athletes and coaches in and out of the airport all winter long.
Five U.S. Ski Team athletes including Vonn, Mancuso, World Cup downhill winners Steven Nyman (Provo, UT), Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) and Stacey Cook (Truckee, CA) met with Delta's Munich staff, signed autographs, posed for pictures and won over some new fans.
"It was exciting for us to meet Delta and learn more about what goes on at the airport," said U.S. Ski Team downhiller Stacey Cook. "It gave us a chance to talk to Delta about how we travel around the world from race to race with tons of gear."
"Delta Air Lines is an important partner for us to make sure our athletes and all of ski their gear are transported safely," said Women's Downhill Coach Alex Hoedlmoser. "The athletes had a great time learning more about the airport and getting to know the staff here in Munich."
"It was great fun for us to meet the athletes and I hope we can do more visits like this with the U.S. Ski Team,” said Delta's customer service manager in Munich, Roland Wolf, who was joined at a luncheon for the Team by Munich Airport Terminal 1 manager Thomas Penner.
Moving the U.S. Ski Team from place to place is a huge operation. After each race, huge cargo vans haul dozens of bags of skis and other gear to the next mountain venue. And, ultimately it all ends up at the Delta Air Lines counter in Munich for the trip home.
The women's team was in transit to its next race in Crans Montana, Switzerland where Vonn hopes to extend her lead in the overall Audi FIS World Cup standings in a downhill and super combined event. The men's downhill team had just arrived from Oslo Monday morning following a World Cup on the Olympic course in Kvitfjell, Norway, and has the week off before World Cup Finals in Bormio, Italy March 12-16. The men's slalom and giant slalom skiers will be in action this weekend in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
