Lanning Wins Europa Cup Downhill
CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (Jan. 17) - T.J. Lanning (Park City, UT), who led the first training run two days earlier, won a Europa Cup downhill Thursday by more than a second.
Lanning was timed in 1:34.55 with Slovenian Rok Perko runner-up in 1:35.63. Other Americans in the top 30 among the field of 92 racers included Bryon Friedman (also Park City) 19th, Kevin Francis (Bend, OR) 21st and Chris Beckmann (Altamont, NY) 28th.
"This win is awesome for T.J.," said U.S. Head Coach Phil McNichol. "This is exactly why we sent him to some Europa Cup races this week, so he'd have some success and give him more confidence for his racing. He obviously dialed-in the course, having the fastest time Tuesday and then coming down fourth in the second training. This is the kind of skiing he's capable of and, obviously, how he'll get back to the World Cup."
