Default Six Skiers To Represent U.S. In Topolino

PARK CITY, Utah (Jan. 15) - Six J3 alpine skiers (ages 13-14) will represent the United States next month at the 47th Topolino Trophy races in Pinzolo, Italy, the premier J3 races in the world. Skiers from more than 40 nations compete and it's the first step in the development pipeline, bringing young racers into their first international competition.

Walt Evans, national competition director for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, said the U.S. skiers include one boy and one girl from the USSA's Eastern, Rocky/Central and West regions. Each region had its own criteria for selection. The Topolino races will be held Feb. 22-23 with giant slalom and slalom on the schedule.

The 2008 Topolino Trophy Team (date of birth, hometown, club program):

Boys
Eastern Region - Sam Macomber, 6/7/93; Plymouth, NH (Franconia Ski Club)
Rocky/Central Region - Conor McDonald, 8/9/93; Frisco, CO (Team Summit)
West Region - Scott Snow, 7/8/93; Sagle, ID (Independence Racing Team)
Girls
Eastern Region - Brianna Whalen, 9/30/93; South Salem, NY (Okemo Mountain School)
Rocky/Central Region - Greta Byrne, 5/12/93; Medford, NJ (Ski & Snowboard Club Vail)
West Region - Foreste Peterson, 9/8/93; Berkeley, CA (Squaw Valley Ski Team)

"We have some outstanding young athletes and we've got some equally outstanding coaches going with them on this trip, which is one of four National Development System projects this year for J3s," Evans said.

Team leader for the trip will be Terry DelliQuadri, USSA Rocky/Central regional director. Coaches will include Marc Stuart of Vermont's Okemo Mountain School, Jenn Stielow, NDS western development manager, and Shep Snow of the Independence Racing Team.
