Default Maine's Two Largest Ski Resorts Report Strong Holiday Season

NEWRY, Maine -- Thanks to a cold, snowy December and momentum generated by new ownership, Maine's Sugarloaf and Sunday River ski resorts witnessed a 35 percent increase in business levels during the Holiday period starting December 24 and ending January 6 as compared to a year ago.

Skier visit totals for the entire season to date have responded similarly, posting an increase of 42 percent over a year ago.

"This was the strongest Holiday season since 1995," said Jim Costello, Director of Sales and Marketing at Sugarloaf and Sunday River. "Our snowmakers got everything open, since then Mother Nature has taken over. We've seen 100" of natural snow this season. Business is booming here at the resorts and in the surrounding snow-based communities."

Current forecasts suggest additional snowfall in the region starting on Sunday night. Phone inquiries and advanced booking for the entire season are pacing well ahead of last winter with prime weekends and holidays filling quickly.

Sugarloaf and Sunday River became part of the Boyne Resorts family in August and both saw the largest capital investments in a decade upon coming under new ownership.

Sugarloaf and Sunday River each have a major fundraising event planned in January. Sugarloaf's Charity Summit, which raises money for the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center and the Maine Cancer Foundation is scheduled for January 18-20. The Lenny Clarke Ski Classic, which raises money for the Genesis Fund is slated for January 25-27 at Sunday River.
