Weather Forces Lauberhorn Changes
WENGEN, Switzerland (Jan. 9) - Facing uncertain weekend weather, World Cup organizers have moved the 78th running of the famed Lauberhorn downhill to Sunday and Sunday's slalom was bumped up one day to Saturday. Live timing will be available for all races at and WCSN will provide same-day, on-demand webstreaming.
At a leg-busting 4,455 meters (2.8 kilometers), the Lauberhorn - one of skiing's most honored "classic" races - is the longest downhill on the World Cup circuit. Racer speeds can reach over 90mph with fast finish times clocking at about two and a half minutes.
U.S. skiers have won the Lauberhorn the last two seasons with Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) taking the title in January 2006 and Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) winning the 77th Lauberhorn in 2007. It was at the 1984 Lauberhorn that Bill Johnson, surviving a wild run that had him off-course at one point, became the first U.S. man to win a World Cup downhill; a couple of weeks later, he won the Olympic DH in Sarajevo.
WCSN will introduce its "Ice Cold12 Pack" of live, on-demand racing webstreaming broadcasts from Wengen. The schedule includes: Friday's super combined at 4:30 a.m. for the downhill portion; Saturday's slalom at 4 a.m. ET; and Sunday's downhill starting at 6 a.m. ET.
