The Alpine World Cup in Levi was cancelled due to lack of enough snow. The Levi Organizing Committee, Finnish Ski Association and International Ski Federation came up with the decision.
The snow-making for the “Black Levi” race hill started on Friday, November 2. However, not enough snow came up to properly prepare the slope for the slalom for both men and women, scheduled next weekend.
According to Chief of Race Tapio Kokko, the snow-making depended on one more day. He says that the fall and the beginning of the winter haven’t been this warm since early 1960s, meaning that Levi is still considered a snow guaranteed place.
Janne Leskinen from Finnish Ski Association says that the financial effects of the cancellation are still unknown. “The race had insurance; therefore cancellation of the race doesn’t affect the financial situation.”
Leskinen adds that one cancellation doesn’t negatively affect the future plans. FIS granted alpine slalom opening World Cup to Finland and Levi until 2011/2012. Future events are not in danger because of the cancellation.
