Sun Peaks (BC), Canada - Final preparations have concluded for the 2007 RE/MAX FIS World Cup Speed Skiing stop at B.C.'s Sun Peaks Resort. From today through Sunday, 50 of the planet’s fastest skiers will battle for $5,000 CDN in prize money in the "fastest non-motorized sport on earth."
The Headwall Speed Skiing Track will be the venue in which racers from nine countries will face the near vertical descent, accelerating from 0 to 175 km/h (109 mph) in a mere eight seconds prior to attempting to stop in a mere 250 meters. Unlike the long, smooth, concave speed skiing tracks in Europe, the Headwall Speed Skiing Track at Sun Peaks Resort is short, extremely steep and convex, meaning these highly skilled athletes may become airborne at speeds of over 160 km/h.
Competitors will be battling for back to back World Cup wins with races on Saturday and Sunday. Two classes of athletes will be competing - “Production” (racers are in downhill suits, helmets and skis up to 223cm in length) and “Unlimited” (racers must be in Speed Skiing equipment – rubber ski suits, speed helmets, and 240cm skis).
The 2007 RE/MAX FIS World Cup of Speed Skiing at Sun Peaks Resort is the only speed skiing event in the Western Hemisphere and is one of the longest consecutively held speed skiing events on the planet, now in its 17th year.
