Default ski flutter

Hey everyone!

I went skiing yesterday for the second time in my life the first which was in 07. I gave it up for snowboarding where it is obviously impossible to cross my skis. So I made it to the blues on the board and i felt I couldnt let skiing kick my tail when it supposed to be easier to learn and harder to master. So I took a Level 1 beginner class (which seemed to be more cardio than skiing but understandably) and had no problems with anything. After and hour on the teaching green I successfully came down the first blue I conquered on the board. (after 4 months) Here is the problem, when I come down the mountain my left ski flutters about tremendously when I try to parallel. I then force my shins more into the tongue of the boot and it eases up only a little. What am I doing wrong?

It could be the skis themselves, im asuming your using rentals. I used to ski on a pair of Solomon teneighty's that were shorter (161's) and with any kind of speed they would start to flutter like that. When I got new skis (170's) I have yet to encounter a speed that my skis dont like. I think the extra length has is where most of the stability came from, but the better construction of the ski can't hurt either.

Someone else might have some advice on technique but I'm no instructor so I can't really help you in the area. My advice would be to rent some longer skis, so long as you can manewver just fine with the current skis.

That may be it. The gave me 130s. What is the average length for skiers? I thought they were very short proportional to my height (5'11")

Usually we use the face rule, beginners will want skis that go up to your chin from the ground, intermediate skiers will want something about to your nose, and experts will want something as tall as they are. Experts will very though depending on what they are planning on using the skis for (ex. deep powder will usually be longer and wider skis, mogols will usually be short, chest high, skinny skis)

So to sum things up you will want to get a ski that when you put the end on the floor the tip will come up to roughly your chin.
