Have a mtg in vail 1st wkend december. what are the odds of having a decent skiing experience?

Later is definitely better. Having said that, Vail usually is at least partly open this early and with El Nino, Colorado could have a very good year.

I skied there second weekend in December last season and they opened christmas Bowl that weekend. Skiing was great on the front side and Game creek Bowl. If you have transportation, and the time, drive over to A basin or Loveland. I have skied at A basin and loveland in early November, and Vail as early as 11/16 (40 years ago).
