There will never be any snow-covered mountains in Cape Ann, but there are plenty of locals who enjoy hitting the slopes when the winter rolls around.
With that in mind, a group of 30-plus current students, along with their parents and some administrators at Manchester Essex Regional High School, are trying to get an alpine race ski team together for the next winter.
"The team has the support of principal James Lee and superintendent Marcia O'Neil if transportation and funding can be raised," said Susan McAuliff, a mother of two sons who plan on competing. "They have to self-fund for the first two years, so we really need to do some fundraising before the Sept. 1 deadline."
The Hooper fund approved a grant for the team's initial seed money, but the ski team hopes to raise an additional $10,000 from a variety of donors including local individuals and businesses in the community. A ski and skate sale and raffle are being planned as well to additional raise money.
"There is no donation too small," explained McAuliff. "We already have an account setup at the school specifically for the ski team."
