Long Odds, But Ligety Has a Shot at GS
Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) comes into Friday’s Audi FIS World Cup Finals as the reigning giant slalom champion. Ligety took the title a year ago in Bormio, Italy with a stunning win to hold off a hard-charging Benni Raich of Austria. Despite his win two weeks ago in Slovenia, Ligety is in a different position and will need yet another win - and some luck - to keep the crystal globe.
Swiss Didier Cuche holds a commanding lead with 414 points - a 52 point spread to Raich and 73 back to Ligety in third. Ligety’s only chance is to finish first or second and hope Cuche and Raich are outside the top 15 that get points. But anything is possible, as Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal found out in super G when leader Hermann Maier made a big mistake and took himself out of title contention, paving the way for Svindal’s win.
