Ski tragedy holds lessons
Quote:
T he death of a Montreal woman, lost in the out-of-bounds area of a B. C. ski hill, is a tragic but cautionary tale.
Gilles Blackburn, 51, and his 44-year-old wife Marie-Josee Fortin, spent days stranded in the frigid Rockies near Golden, B. C.,with nothing but two granola bars, their skis and the clothes they wore for a day at Kicking Horse, a resort for advanced skiers. He survived 10 days but Fortin eventually died, with temperatures dropping as low as -14 C.
Investigators are looking into what happened, particularly why an SOS symbol spotted in the snow two days later failed to launch an active search. The marking was reported and acted upon, but it took three more SOS spottings and another seven days before Blackburn was found. And then it was by a private helicopter company undertaking its own search because RCMP failed to dispatch a team.
