Surprise Winner in Combined
Austrian Romed Baumann took in the first World Cup win of his career Sunday as he finished first in a super combined in Italy. The U.S. Ski Team's Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) was 25th.
The Sestriere super combined featured a super G plus a single run of slalom.
"Ted skied sections really well but, unfortunately, made two big mistakes - one on top and one on the bottom - and because of that he had a slow super G run," Men's Alpine Head Coach Sasha Rearick said.
Ligety's mistakes in the super G had him sitting in 43rd before the slalom where, according to Rearick, he skied well enough to make up time and finish 25th.
"In the slalom he skied really well. He skied some of the best slalom I've seen him ski this winter," Rearick said. "On the top he was really aggressive and clean. On the bottom he did get caught in a rut and lost a little speed, but he moved up."
According to Rearick, while having the race on the 2006 Olympic super G hill was great, challenging conditions hindered the race today.
"The hill was the Olympic super G course, which was really nice. It was a very technical set with lots of terrain and it had its tactical challenges because of that," Rearick said. "The course did deteriorate in the slalom run because of the sun, though."
With the races in Sestriere now complete, the Team will train for two days and rest one prior to heading to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for tech raced Feb. 28-March 1.
