U.S. Sweeps New Zealand GS Races
The season appears to be starting out at a good pace for the U.S. Alpine Ski Team with Stacey Cook (Mammoth, CA), Erik Schlopy (Park City, UT) and Megan McJames winning in a pair of men's and women's FIS giant slaloms on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday's race featured a U.S. Ski Team sweep of the both podiums with U.S. downhill and super G champion Cook led a 1-2-3-4 parade with Chelsea Marshall (Pittsfield, VT), Jessica Kelley (Starksboro, VT) and Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) leading the women's field.
Team veteran Schlopy returned to the slopes this season by taking the men's victory. Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH), who broke through to the A Team following his capture of the 2008 U.S. Slalom and combined titles, and reigning World Cup giant slalom champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) filled out the top three.
U.S. racers owned the podium again on Wednesday with McJames taking the second GS followed by Cook in second. Warner Nickerson (Gilford, NH) snagged the men's victory.
The races come near the end of three-week training camps at Coronet for both men's and women's tech Teams and feature a roster of international racers who are gearing up for the impending World Cup season.
Races continue Thursday and Friday from Coronet with a men's and women's slalom slated for each day.
