Default Alpine Team Trains at Timberline

The U.S. Disabled Alpine Ski Team recently wrapped up its annual speed elements camp at Timberline on Mt. Hood. It has been a fantastic snow year on the glacier and the team was excited to get back on snow after its May fundamentals camp in Colorado.

"The Timberline Staff did an amazing job with providing us with the best possible training environment,” said Coach Ian Garner. "We were able to run full length super G on some challenging terrain with incredible snow conditions.”

After the week of inclement weather, the team moved up to The Mile lift where they began running gates and working on speed techniques and tactics.

Following five days on the mild terrain of The Mile, the team moved up to the west side of the Palmer lift to run full-length training runs.

"Being able to run full length speed never gets old," said Head Coach Ray Watkins. "This was great preparation for World Championships and the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver"

The speed elements camp allowed the coaching staff to work with many of the newcomers and development team members for the first time in speed. Many of the veterans were able to fine tune technique and tactics on the incredible surface.

The staff also welcomed new coach Erik Leirfallom who served as service for the team during the 2008 World Cup schedule.

"I am really enjoying my time with this group,” said Leirfallom. "Training at Mt Hood is a great way to get to know the athletes in a different capacity than I did as a serviceman.”

Every athlete on the team made huge strides in their speed skiing during the two-week camp.

"The Timberline staff always gives us first class treatment and world class conditions. This camp was one of our best ever," Watkins added.

The team will reconvene on the July 15 for their annual technical camp at Mt. Hood.
