Genevieve Tougas remembers her first day as a freestyle skier.
She buckled her boots, summoned her courage, somehow managed to make it down the plastic runway at the Lac Beauport, Que., water ramp and splashed into the water relatively unscathed.
That was four years ago. Now she’s hoping to make a different kind of splash at the 2014 Olympics, maybe even the 2010 Games if everything goes right.
“That first day on the water ramp, I think my coaches had a couple of heart attacks,” the 21-year-old from Saint Hubert, Que., said with a grin during a national aerials team camp at Cypress Mountain this week.
“I knew how to flip. When I got into the jump I was comfortable but going down the ramp. You can’t slow down, you just go. I was way back on my heels. It was an adventure.”
