Slovenia Grabs World Cup Downhill Skiing Gold for the First Time
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - The men's World Cup ski racing schedule resumed Friday after the 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships with the first of two downhills on the renowned Kandahar speed run. Andrej Jerman earned Slovenia's first downhill World Cup win while Canada's Erik Guay (Mont-Tremblant, QC) earned the bronze. Steven Nyman (Provo, UT) led U.S. athletes, finishing 12th with Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA) 13th.
In a makeup race originally scheduled for last month in Kitzbuehel, Austria, Jerman's winning time was 1:56.82 with Austrian Hans Grugger second. Guay completed the podium in a time of 1:57.26.
Nyman started 18th and was 12th in 1:58.02 with Macartney, running No. 2, timed in 1:58.08. Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) was 28th with Erik Fisher (Middleton, ID) 40th and JJ Johnson (Park City, UT) 42nd over the 3.5K course. Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA), running ninth, skied out.
"It was a late start [12:45 p.m. local time] because the race was picked up last month and this was the only time available on TV," U.S. DH Coach Chris Brigham explained. "It's full-on springtime here, grass and flowers growing, so early numbers played a role in how a skier did...and I think after bib 16 no one moved up very much, if at all."
The temperature at the start was over 40 degrees F., over 50 at the finish, indicating the soft conditions of the snow. "Steven and 'Mac' did a good job, and Mac moved closer to the top 25 to make World Cup Finals [he's 27th, 20 points away from 25th]...
"We've got another good opportunity [Saturday] with some early start numbers because they're saying the weather should hold, have some sunshine...and then rain Sunday for the slalom."
