Midwest ski hills may lack vertical, but a surprising number of world-class alpine ski racers trace their roots back to the heartland. Born in St. Paul, Minn., Lindsey Vonn, 24, headlines the list of U.S. Ski Team members with Midwest connections. Vonn clinched her second consecutive overall World Cup title on March 11 by winning the downhill event in Are, Sweden.
Vonn started at the heart of heartland ski racing, Erich Sailer’s renowned program at Buck Hill ski area near Minneapolis. Buck Hill also produced former Olympic racers Kristina Koznick, Tasha Nelson, Joe Levins and Tim Hanson.
