Sweden's Jens Byggmark completed a shock double on Sunday, winning his second career World Cup race just 24 hours after celebrating his first thanks to his strong second run.
The 21-year-old little know Swede, competing in his first full World Cup season, was lying in 5th place following the opening leg of Sunday's slalom but seized victory with a storming performance in the second run. The skier from Taernaby beat by only 3/100 of a second Austria's Mario Matt, who was also runner-up to the Swede in Saturday's slalom.
Italy's Manfred Moelgg was leading after the opening leg but fell back to 3rd place, a further 2/100 back.
Switzerland's Marc Berthod, the surprising winner at Adelboden, was a strong 4th ahead of Germany's Felix Neureuther and Austria's Benjamin Raich who has never been in the run for victory today.
USA's Ted Ligety was the fastest in the second run which helped him to secure a promising 7th place while Kalle Palander came in 9th. His teammate Bode Miller, the 2005 Overall Champion, was unable to end his long-running jinx in the slalom discipline, failing to finish a slalom for the ninth consecutive time.
The American, who has not reached a podium in slalom since his last win at Sestriere in December 2004, was just five gates from the finish line on Sunday when a tight turn caused him to flip wide.
Overall leader Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway finished 16th to increase his lead in the Overall standings on his nearest rivals Didier Cuche of Switzerland and Miller. Slalom World Cup champion Giorgio Rocca of Italy also had a bad day, crashing out at the third gate of the opening run.
Byggmark is wondering
"It's just too much," a beaming Byggmark said after the race. "This victory is even more crazy and amazing than the first one. I received so many phone calls yesterday evening I was really moved. Today I just wanted to get a good result but I never expected to win again."
"I didn't sleep so well last night because I had a hard time realizing what was happening to me so I felt a little tired this morning. Yet I found back all my energy for the race and felt relaxed before the second run. I told myself that I was having a great time here and that I have to attack again because I had nothing to lose. It worked out perfectly, but I still don't know what's going on with me."
"I'm very proud now that a gondola of the Hahnenkamm lift is now going to have my name on the front side. It's a big honour. I saw the "Stenmark" gondola yesterday and I thought it would be cool to have one for me sometimes in the future. It happened much faster than I thought."
