Kirkwood received almost perfect scores in the downhill terrain category. The ratings were based primarily on readers' average ranking, number of reviews, and specific comments made in OnTheSnow.com over the winter season.
"More and more skiers and snowboarders are relying on the word of their peers when they make resort choices," said Mountain News President and Publisher Rob Brown, whose company publishes OnTheSnow.com. "We believe the importance of reader advisories will continue to grow each year and these annual awards provide a peek into their thinking."
Reviewers were clear in their comments: "There is a lot of black and double black terrain… The management of the mountain is run with a great attitude. Everyone who works there seems motivated and empowered to do the right thing for the visitors… If you are a beginner do not be intimidated. Kirkwood offers top notch instruction, equipment knowledge, and intro. The place speaks for itself by having the deepest snow, friendly and helpful staff, great snowboard instructors, and trails with various difficulties… Kirkwood is about the skiing and riding. Who cares about après-ski anyway?"
Kirkwood has a base elevation of 7,800 feet. Locals swear Kirkwood catches the best snowstorms streaming into the Sierra. There are 2,300 acres for skiing and riding, 65 trails, two high-speed quads.
