Default binding wider than ski...that OK?

Just bought a new pair of skis in which the shop mounted the bindings for me. Noticed that the binding plate is wider than the ski, ie it overlaps the ski about quarter inch. Is this normal?(I've been skiing on the same ski for 20 years now, and had to replace them. On my old ski's the bindings are smaller than the ski width).

I do a lot of back country skiing, breaking my own trails, so I'm afraid that I will get build up under this lip. Should I be concerned and try to find a binding with a smaller profile?

Thank you for the advice...
