Question What to look for in cross country skis?

I'm considering treating myself to a whole new pair of cross country boots and skis - I'm thinking about retiring my 20 year old borowed ones, as the boots are falling apart and I can't find new boots that fit the bindings on the skis. I'm somewhat of a beginner though, so I was wondering if anyone has any tips about what to look for in a new set?

I was thinking waxless, as I don't have the knowledge or inclination to wax, and I'm looking for something that's pretty all round - most of my skiing is not on pisted or tracked routes, but I would like something that's not going to be awful on a tracked route. Skating is not something I really fancy doing. I'm also trying not to spend too much money, but would rather buy something that's going to work decently than get inappropriate stuff just because it's cheap.

So, please, any tips you might have on looking for skis or bindings or boots greatfully recieved.

Thanks!

Tim
