Default Calories Burned Per Hour

A cross country skier can burn anywhere from around 400 calories an hour to 1400 calories an hour depending on weight, terrain, speed & effort.

Calories Burned During Exercise

There is some good info on this site. Lists & percentages of daily intake of carbs, fats, vitamins & minerals, etc. As far as what foods to eat..I could only recommend what works for me. If you're interested in that info send me a PM.

The best training I've seen or heard of for cross country skiing is the roller skis.
Below are a couple links in regards to training & technique.

Training & Technique: Cross Country Skiing at xcskiworld.com
AXCS: Cross Country Skiing at xcskiworld.com
Training & Technique - Cross country skiing - equipment, technique - xc ski reports
SkiPost - Cross Country Ski Source

Hope that helps.

What foods to you suggest taking along when skiing? I like to wear a backpack to carry snacks for the lift ride.

Thx,

I usually take some beef jerky, peanuts, power bars, chocolate covered raisins, water...things like that. Sometimes power bars can freeze up on ya, that’s why I like the peanuts or raisins...pop a couple in your mouth and they thaw pretty quick.

Also, by putting the peanuts or raisins into plastic baggies they can conform to tight spaces in an already full backpack. Thus, using up all available space in your pack...and not having to carry bulky containers or packaging. That extra weight can become a bear if you plan on doing any boot packing.

For my quick sugar I love gummy bears (at ski resorts, you can stick the yellow ones to the chair lift and they look like boogers). For the complex carbs, I like granola bars (the chewy kind don't freeze as easily). I try to avoid overspending on anything sold specifically as health food. It's really about the calories. Definitely don't forget to keep hydrated. If you don't keep well hydrated, you will run out of energy very quickly regardless of what you eat, your body can't regulate temperature as well, and if your in the backcountry this can be really bad news.
