This will "seal" the pores of the ski base and help prevent drying out and hardening. While it may be a good idea, I don't think it is really critical. I had a pair of old waxless skis for years and they lived in the garage every summer and I had no issue with them. If you do decide to wax them, just use a a brash brush to clean the wax off of the fish scale area.
