Hi and welcome to the forum.

I am no expert at skiing; in fact, just going to learn this season. I am however, an advance boarder. To answer your question, I would really say that a lot depends on your desires and what kind of terrain you have below the sudden pitch. Are you talking about a relatively short disruption in the groomed terrain, or a prolonged pitch? The snow conditions also will dictate how you deal with a situation. If the off piste snow is deep and somewhat soft, it can act like brakes enabling you to get down something pretty steep slower and in more control than on the firmer groomed.
