I would HIGHLY suggest taking a few lessons from a Ski School. Depending on where you take it from, it could be a really great experience. Not to mention the fact that if you learn from your friends or even family who you think are "better" than you, you will be learning THEIR way of skiing and its not a universal sport. Everyone adds a little something different, though there is a genearl outline to follow. Learning from friends or family can result in bad habits being formed that wont allow you to expand past a ceartain point. Sure you may be able to ski a black diamond or double black anywhere, it doesn't mean you ACTUALLY "skied" it. Many get those two confused. Getting down the mountain and skiing them are very different. Ski School will start you off with good techniques and fundemenatal and then as you get better you can tweak it to fit you more comfortably.
