Default Hoffman Breaks Ski, Still Leads

Noah Hoffman (Aspen, CO) led the U.S. in the men's 20K freestyle technique mass start at the FIS Nordic Junior World Championships finishing 23rd despite breaking a ski at the start. Ida Sargent (Orleans, VT) led the U.S. women in 36th in the 10K.

German Phillip Marschall won the men's race with Therese Johaug of Norway taking the women's title for her second straight gold.

It was a tough break for Hoffman, an Aspen native who skis for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. He broke a ski at the start and had to wait for the pack to hit the trail before picking up a replacement. He had moved all the way up to sixth after 11K's, but lost steam and dropped back.

Hoffman had been 12th in the classic technique event two days earlier. Freestyle is his better event and he had high expectations before breaking the ski in the mass start. It is legal to replace a broken ski during a race.

World Juniors wrap-up in the Bolzano region of Italy Friday with relays.
