Injured Vasilyev to miss Vancouver Games
Dimitry Vasilyev, the leader of the Russian ski jumping team, has been forced out of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games after aggravating a knee injury, local media reported Thursday.
Reports said Vasiliev hurt an existing knee injury, which he sustained at a leg of the World Cup in Austria in January, during a practice session in Lillehammer, Norway on Wednesday.
A Russian team doctor diagnosed a knee ligament rupture, and said Vasiliev would have to undergo knee surgery as soon as possible.
The head of the Russian ski jumping federation, Vladimir Slavsky, said Vasiliev would not be replaced. Only four ski jumpers will now represent Russia in Vancouver.
"It's a pity Vasiliev suffered the injury just before the Olympics and will have to miss the Games," said Slavsky.
"But the team still has the same aim at the Games -- to clinch a medal in the team competition."
